My name is Duce. My friends sometimes call me Ducey. Mostly, I would like it for someone to call me adopted!

I’m a 10-year-old Plott Hound mix. Yes, I’m a senior guy, but I really think that just makes me distinguished. No having to put up with those silly young puppy antics with me! My friends tell me I have the most beautiful brindle coat and the warmest eyes! Do you think so?

Well gosh, I got off track here—I shouldn’t talk about superficial things like looks and age—let me tell you a bit about what makes me, well, ME! My canine sibling and I lost our home when our owners passed away. That made me sad because my whole world changed and I didn’t know what was going to happen to me. But the lovely people at Shep’s Place took me in.

Because of all of that, though, and only knowing one way of life for a long time, I can be a bit shy with new people at first. I don’t immediately want strangers to come up and smother me with love. I mean, do you, either? But let me tell you what—in the last several months I have met a lot of new people and I am rocking new introductions. I’ve discovered I like new people—especially when they get to know me first and walk around with me and let me sniff things. Sometimes the new people also try to win me over with food, which helps. I like meeting new people now, but I like to pretend I still need some treats to feel safe. I’m smart that way!

Even though I’m a senior, I still like to play with bouncy balls and stuffies. I know “drop it” and I love to fetch the toys and bring them back to you. After a game of playing toys, I’m more than happy to just hang out with you on the couch and catch some football, NetFlix, movies, Animal Planet—really, anything you want to watch!

In my spare time when I’m not playing with balls and stuffies, or hanging out on the couch (and when the weather is nice) I love chasing butterflies, moths, flies, and grasshoppers. Ok, full confession—sometimes I like to chomp on all those things after I chase them. I think they’re yummy! Hey, don’t judge me—I mean, have you ever tried any of those things? If not, you should try them before you think I’m foolish for eating them. I am trying to cut back on the butterflies, though—you know, to help the butterfly population.

When it’s nice out, I also like to occasionally dip my toes in a baby pool. And lay in the warm sunshine. I love to look at the sunlight when it hits the grass and moves. I’m actually a bit mesmerized by light that moves like sunlight, flashlights and things.

Now snow, I’m not such a huge fan of that! I will go outside to do my business, but I don’t want to stay out in it long after that! It is cold on my paw pads!

I walk great on the leash, and I enjoy walks to see new things. They say I’m really just a smart boy who only wants some guidance from you on what you want from me.

Because I’ve never really lived or interacted with another dog (other than my sibling), a home where I am the only pet may be best for me. I think I really just need a quiet, consistent environment, where I feel safe with my human. I think you will find I’m the perfect companion!
